Earth Day is right around the corner- this Friday, April 22 to be exact. What is Earth Day? It started back in 1970 as a day to recognize the importance of a clean and healthy environment and to fight for it.

It began when Senator Gaylord Nelson (yes, that’s his real name) saw the need for legislation to protect our environment.  Inspired by the opposition movements of the 1960’s, he helped organize Earth Day as a way to protest destroying Earth.

The first Earth Day included many marches and events calling for the U.S. to clean up its act.  Earth Day, its actions, and Senator Nelson helped bring about the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act-all passed in the 1970’s.  As a soon-to-be San Jose State  University graduate, I also need to mention that he is an Alum (back then San Jose State College)- so proud.

This there are still many of Earth Day events happening throughtout the country- a quick google search of “Earth Day” and the name of your city will bring them up.  For those in the Bay Area, look on Earth Day San Francisco (unfortunately there isn’t a central data base for each Earth Day event).
